Scott Sewell’s practice is principally focused on the representation of individuals, families and business owners in the areas of strategic estate planning involving wealth preservation and transfer, estate and trust administration, and business succession.
Over the course of his career, Scott has developed specific experience and expertise assisting high net worth individuals and families preserve assets and avoid estate taxes for multiple generations, as well as protect future heirs from creditor claims by way of spendthrift provisions, through the use of dynasty trusts.
As part of his comprehensive estate planning and administration practice, he coordinates the inventorying and valuations of properties and other assets, obtains releases of estate tax liens, coordinates and prepares state and federal estate tax returns, and drafts funding agreements to ensure dynasty trust assets are properly allocated to the beneficiaries’ trusts. Significant attention to detail is paid to the preparation of plan designs and estate planning documents so as to minimize the risk of future disputes among family members or with the Internal Revenue Service.
Scott also works with closely held businesses, including a significant number in the energy and agriculture industries, to prepare for the smooth transfer of business interests through the use of effective business succession and tax planning strategies.
His achievements have earned him inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America (trusts and estates).
Scott holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and agricultural economics from Oklahoma State University and is a certified public accountant. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the Oklahoma State University Foundation, where he is also a member of the investment, governance and compensation committees.
