Associate FAQs

How does McAfee & Taft's compensation and benefit package for associates compare to other Oklahoma firms?

We believe the Firm’s salary and benefits package for associates is the best in Oklahoma.

Are associates given responsibility early in their careers?

Yes. Associates are encouraged to ask for and accept as much responsibility as early in their careers as possible.

Does the Firm pay for bar exam and bar review expenses?

Yes.

What is the partnership track at McAfee & Taft?

Typically, the partnership track is 7½ or 8½ years, although it can vary based on individual circumstances.

Does McAfee & Taft hire a large number of associates with the expectation that only a few will become shareholders?

No. Associates are hired with the goal that each will become a shareholder of the Firm.

Do new associates work primarily with shareholders or senior associates?

Almost exclusively, new associates are provided work by shareholders. While new associates do work with senior associates, that work is usually part of a larger case or transaction for which a shareholder is responsible.

What are the billable hour requirements for associates?

There is an expectation that associates will bill 1,900 hours per year. Typically, associates cannot develop professionally unless they are working at that level. We recognize that burnout and fatigue are critical issues, and measures are taken to ensure that does not happen.

Are associates paid bonuses?

Associates are eligible for merit-based bonuses. Associate performance bonuses are determined during the annual associate review period in June.

Are associates given feedback on their work?

Yes. Shareholders are encouraged to provide feedback to associates at the completion of each project. Additionally, annual associate evaluation occurs in June of each year, and associates are given feedback on their work.
