Summer Associates FAQ


Are summer associates allowed to "split" their summers?

Yes.  In fact, we normally insist upon it.  We encourage and welcome law students to compare McAfee & Taft with other law firms and potential employers.  We do, however, require summer associates to clerk with us during the first half (generally, the first six weeks) of the summer.


Are summer associates required to work in one practice area?

Absolutely not. Like our associates, our summer associates are encouraged to work with many different lawyers in different areas of our practice.


Are summer associates provided with feedback on their work?

Yes.  Lawyers for whom summer associates have worked are encouraged to provide direct feedback at the completion of each project. Additionally, the supervising shareholder and supervising associate for each summer associate obtain formal written evaluations on every project and discuss the evaluations with their summer associate.


What is the compensation for summer associates?

McAfee & Taft is committed to paying at the top of the market, including our summer associates.  In 2007, summer associates earned $1,500 per week, prorated for partial weeks.


Does McAfee & Taft hire its associates from the summer associate program?

Most definitely.  We look to the summer associate program as the primary source to fulfill our associate hiring needs.  However, lateral hires are also made on a need and case-by-case basis.


When are offers for associate positions made to second-year summer associates?

Typically, offers for associate positions are made to students who have completed their second year of law school at the end of a summer associate's stay at McAfee & Taft, or as soon as possible thereafter. Offers for first-year summer associates to return for the next summer are generally made at the same time.
