2023 Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Episode 1 — Beware of Phishing

Halloween isn’t the only thing that makes October the scariest month of the year! Cyber crime is terrifying!

October is Cybersecurity Awareness month. Our I.T. Department takes advantage of this opportunity each year to help raise awareness about potential cyber-attacks and how they could impact our firm. Similarly, we want to take the opportunity to share information about cyber-attacks with a video each week on our social media.

Phishing emails aim to have an email recipient take some sort of action. They usually do so by posing as a trusted source requesting that you click a link, enter your login credentials, or download a malicious attachment — that would then compromise login credentials or other sensitive information.

There are a few things you can look for to identify a phishing email:

  1. Are you expecting this email?
  2. Have you received email from this address before?
  3. Are there any grammatical or typographical errors?
  4. Is the email trying to elicit some type of emotional response?
For example, “Act now” or “Enter for a Chance to Win.”

If you aren’t sure whether the email is legitimate, you can contact the sender directly to confirm legitimacy, or reach out to your company’s I.T. department for assistance in verifying if the email is safe to open. It can be scary to think about someone obtaining your personal information, but being aware of the social engineering tactics cyber criminals use can help mitigate that risk.
