John Schaefer joined McAfee & Taft in 1973 and retired in 2023 after 50 years of service to the firm. Over the course of his long and distinguished career, which spanned six decades, he practiced in the areas of employee benefits law, estate planning, probate, and business taxation. His achievements earned him inclusion in Best Lawyers (trusts and estates law).
Prior to joining McAfee & Taft, John served as a captain in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the U.S. Army from 1966 – 1970 and as a lawyer in private practice with a Texas-based firm for three years. While working as a JAG attorney, the Oklahoma native earned his Master of Laws degree in taxation from The George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C.
