October 22, 2021

Anna DeShazo with awardMcAfee & Taft proudly congratulates Anna DeShazo, a legal assistant in the firm’s Tulsa office, for being named the recipient of the 2021 Betty Northcutt Employee of the Year Award. The presentation was made by Matt Bown, the firm’s chief operating officer, at an all-staff meeting on October 19, 2021.

“We could not be more pleased than to have Anna DeShazo win the inaugural Betty Northcutt Employee of the Year Award,” said Bown. “Anna epitomizes the values, character and performance that represented Betty’s career with the firm. Anna is an extraordinary member of the McAfee family, and no one is more deserving of this recognition. Huge congratulations and thank you to Anna!”

Anna began her legal career as a legal secretary in 1973 and worked for three law firms and a district attorney in southern Missouri over the course of 21 years before moving to Oklahoma in 1994. Since that time she has worked with the same litigation team, including working for the Tulsa-based boutique litigation firm of Eldridge, Cooper, Steichen & Leach. She joined McAfee & Taft in 2011 when the two firms merged.

In nominating Anna for this honor, attorneys and fellow staff members alike praised her for her incredible work ethic, outstanding performance, and unwavering commitment to always go above and beyond the call of duty for the benefit of clients, colleagues, and the firm.

“Anna has never missed a day of work or been late for work,” said one attorney. “On a consistent basis we have clients call her, rely on her for information, and constantly compliment her demeanor and performance. She has never complained, and has happily taken on more every day while maintaining an unbelievable attitude. She has tremendous pride in the firm and the work product that she produces. She is the first to offer to help and to mentor. No job is too small or too big.”

“Anna’s work quality and quantity are beyond superior,” said another nominator. “Her work is always top-notch, perfect. She makes our firm look superior, and deserves so much credit for what are teams are able to do.”

Anna’s contributions to the firm extend beyond her assigned areas of responsibility, as noted by another attorney.

“Anna is an absolute joy to work with. She is not my assigned secretary, yet she is constantly doing things that make my life easier. She recognizes tasks and completes them before anyone has to ask (even if it’s not technically her job to do so). She is kind, respectful to her peers, and outrageously good at her job.”

The Betty Northcutt Employee of the Year Award – affectionately called “The Betty” – was created and named in honor of Betty Northcutt (1929 – 2020), one of Oklahoma’s first female certified public accountants and a long-time employee of McAfee & Taft. Betty began her career working with pioneering lawyer Kenneth McAfee prior to the firm’s founding in 1952 and was an active and loyal member of the firm for more than six decades. This award honors those who, like Betty, have made a significant impact on the firm’s success through their talent, expertise, initiative, dedication, loyalty, and respect for others.
