Credit Check Dilemma: Follow the Rules, Know the Risks, Reap the Rewards

HR Hero Audio Conference

Recently, the EEOC filed a complaint against Freeman Companies, a Dallas-based corporate event-planning company, claiming that the employer’s use of credit histories and criminal background checks discriminates against black, Hispanic, and male job applicants in violation of Title VII. Last December, they sued Kaplan Higher Education for the same reason.

So where do these lawsuits leave employers and HR professionals? Should you conduct background checks? How can you be sure a credit check is appropriate and reliable? How can you be certain you’re not vulnerable to lawsuits?

During this HR Hero audio conference, McAfee & Taft employment attorneys Sam Fulkerson and Nathan Whatley discuss the legal dos and don’ts for uncovering background information on employees and job applicants.
