McAfee & Taft family law attorney Brita Cantrell, along with Judge Thad Balkman of Cleveland County District Court, led a session on how to conduct the effective direct examination of witnesses at a trial skills CLE seminar sponsored by the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Family Law Section on December 6, 2018. The presentation included discussions on how to identify the laws and standards controlling every issue the court will have to decide, how to identify the facts and witnesses that are most likely to lead to a successful outcome, and how to organize each direct examination as to its purpose in providing the court with critical evidence. With the assistance of panelists David Echols, Judge Richard Ogden of Oklahoma County District Court, and Fletcher Handley, the group used a case study to walk participants through all the elements of direct examination at a trial.
