Employee Benefits Seminar (Oklahoma City) Health Care Reform + Supreme Court Ruling = Now What?

The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent 5-4 decision to uphold the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act officially ended the legal debate regarding the constitutionality of the Health Care Reform law passed by Congress in 2010. Yet after years of political and legal wrangling, the law – as well as its interpretation and implementation – remains one of the most complicated ever in U.S. history.

So it’s not surprising that many employers are left asking themselves, “Now what?”

To discuss the impact of the law and to provide a timeline of essential deadlines and action steps necessary to maintain compliance, McAfee & Taft‘s Employee Benefits Group is hosting two complimentary half-day seminars—one in Oklahoma City and one in Tulsa—for benefits and HR professionals, corporate executives and financial officers, risk managers, and business owners. Richard Nix, employee benefits attorney and managing director of McAfee & Taft, will serve as host and moderator for the event that will feature employee benefits attorneys Jim PrinceJohn PapahronisBill FreudenrichBrandon Long and Alison Patel as presenters. Robyn Piper, founder and president of Piper Jordan and one of the leading national voices on employee benefits issues, will make a special appearance at the Oklahoma City seminar as a guest speaker for the first session of that day’s seminar. Todd Neaves, president of PremierSource and a leading consultant to employers for group health plans, retirement plans and risk management, will be the guest speaker at the Tulsa seminar.

  • Changes to flexible spending accounts
  • Part-time employee issues
  • Other legal requirements and compliance issues, including summary of benefits and coverage, W-2 reporting, payment of Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute fees, etc.

  • Effective dates for specific provisions of the new law

There is no cost to attend the seminar, but reservations are required. Limited seating remains available so we encourage you to register today.   • The seminar will be held in The Grand Ballroom located on the second floor of The Skirvin Hotel.
  • Seminar check-in and the continental breakfast will open at 7:45am in the lobby area just outside the ballroom. The program will begin promptly at 8:30am. Due to the large number of people registered, we encourage you to arrive early enough to allow sufficient time to make it through the check-in process, grab refreshments and find a seat before the seminar begins.
  • To help us expedite the check-in process, we encourage you to bring with you to the seminar a printed copy of the registration confirmation email that we sent to everyone who registered.  
  • To accommodate space requirements, there is a limited number of classroom-style seating available, while the remainder is standard, "theater-style" seating (chairs only, no table). If classroom-style seating is important to you, we encourage you to arrive early.
  • As you find your seat, we ask that you sit in the next available seat closest to the aisle, leaving no empty seat between you and the next person. Our available seating is near or at capacity, so we want to be able to quickly accommodate everyone looking for seating by making available empty seats toward the outside of each row.
  • Meeting rooms are often on the cooler side, so we strongly recommend attendees who are sensitive to room temperature to come prepared. We make every effort to work with the facilities management to adjust room temperatures to make everyone as comfortable as possible, but are not always able to accommodate everyone’s preferences.
  • Parking is available in several downtown parking garages (at car owner’s expense). The Skirvin does offer valet parking for $26. 
    • Santa Fe Parking Garage — immediately adjacent to The Skirvin Hotel; approximately 100 spaces have been reserved for this seminar, first-come, first-served; rates are $2 for first hour and $1 per additional hour, or $7 per day.
    • Buffalo Parking Lot — Located east of EK Gaylord (and on the other side of the railroad tracks), and the north side of main, roughly two blocks east of The Skirvin Hotel; look for the buffalo collectibles; approximately 100 spaces are available, first-come, first-served; rates are $3 per day.
    • Century Center Parking Garage — next to the Sheraton and within a couple blocks of The Skirvin; approximately 100 spaces have been reserved for this seminar; rates are $2 for first hour and $1 per additional hour, or $7 per day.
    • Main Street Parking Garage — one block south and half-block west of The Skirvin; limited number of space available, first-come, first-served; rates are $2 per hour, or $8 per day.
    Due to extensive construction throughout the downtown area that is significantly impacting traffic flow, we strongly encourage all seminar attendees, prior to making the trip downtown, to review the official Downtown Traffic Advisory as well as the downloadable Downtown Traffic Advisory Map (PDF), both updated weekly by city planners. One of the most notable obstacle affects those coming from I-40 who would normally exit at Shields/EK Gaylord. That street will be closed between SW 4th and Reno and traffic will be detoured around that area.
