Employers facing a challenge: Class offers some advice in handling medical marijuana law

McAfee & Taft labor and employment attorney Charlie Plumb was featured in a front-page story in the Woodward News following his presentation on Oklahoma’s new medical marijuana law before a large group of employers at the High Plains Technology Center in Woodward on August 15, 2018.

In the article titled “Employers facing a challenge: Class offers some advice in handling medical marijuana law,” Plumb urged employers to be proactive in updating their drug and alcohol policies, educating their entire workforces, and training their supervisors to recognize impairment in the workplace.

“… it’s going to be tempting to kind of wait this out and see how all the laws and regulations, and any lawsuits, play out,” said Plumb.  “That’s a real mistake.  I think an employer who waits to see how this plays out is going to be behind the curveball.”

As part of his presentation, Plumb reviewed lawful restrictions on medical marijuana that employers could implement and enforce as a way to maintain a safe, drug-free workplace.
