Law grads jockey for salary offers

Attorneys from various-sized Oklahoma law firms, as well as officials from the state’s three law schools, were interviewed for a Journal Record article that examined the salary expectations of law school graduates.

According to the National Association of Legal Career Professionals, the median first-year salary for an associate is $42,000 in Oklahoma City and $50,000 in Tulsa.  Many of those interviewed for the article agreed that while many graduates expect higher salaries, the top graduates of the top law schools are actually commanding them.

John Hermes, managing director of McAfee & Taft, was quoted as saying that McAfee & Taft actively seeks the top students. “We pay the price in order to get that,” he said.
