Legal and Ethical Issues Arising from Social Media Use

University of Tulsa 2011 Conference of Accountants

Along with the benefits of technology come certain ethical concerns and potential liabilities. We want privacy, yet we are posting more and more information about our lives on the Internet. The relative freedom afforded by social networking services has caused concern regarding the potential of its misuse.

This presentation looks at the some of the possible ethical and legal issues surrounding the use of social media, including privacy issues, avoiding discriminatory conduct and harassment, protecting confidential information and corporate security, and using social media as a recruiting and hiring tool. It also covers a list of issues to be considered when developing and adopting a social media policy.
