McAfee & Taft Helps Camp Fire USA Kick Off “Candy for Soldiers” Campaign

January 15, 2008

McAfee & Taft has teamed up with Camp Fire USA – Heart of Oklahoma Council as the corporate sponsor of the 2008 “Candy for Soldiers” campaign.  Now in its sixth year, the program provides boxes of Camp Fire candy to soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The state’s largest law firm kicked off the campaign by making the first donation of bulk candy prior to the official start of the four-week sales campaign, which begins January 19.

Kim Kamp Leslie, executive director and CEO of the Camp Fire USA – Heart of Oklahoma Council and former employee of McAfee & Taft, was excited about the opportunity to team up with her former employer who still holds a special place in her heart.

“We’re encouraging more corporate participation this year, and I knew that McAfee & Taft would lead the way,” Leslie said. “When one corporate leader steps up, others are sure to follow.”

The idea to show support of the troops by sending them candy came in early 2003. The Council contacted the USO in Washington, D.C. and worked with them that first year to get the candy to the troops.

“We received great feedback from the soldiers, who said the candy reminded them of home,” Leslie said. “After hearing that, we knew we had to step up our efforts in future campaigns to make sure even more soldiers received a box.”

The next year, the USO suggested shipping the candy directly to Ft. Hood, Texas, which is home to the largest deployment unit in the United States.  Since that time, the candy supplier, Brown & Haley, has coordinated and paid for all shipping costs of the candy to Ft. Hood where it is divided and sent to U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, she said.

“The community has embraced this project, and we expect sales to increase this year as everyone is more than willing to do anything possible to support those who fight for our freedom.”

Sales of the candy run through February 18th. The products available for shipping to the troops include Brown & Haley’s signature candy, Almond Roca Buttercrunch, Smooth Mint Patties (produced specifically for Camp Fire candy sales and only available for the sale) and the best-selling Almond Caramel Clusters.

Organizations and businesses who are interested in making bulk donations of candy should contact the Camp Fire USA – Heart of Oklahoma Council office at (405) 478-5646.
