Shareholder James Webb named general counsel of Chesapeake Energy Corporation
James R. Webb, an accomplished trial lawyer and shareholder with McAfee & Taft, has announced his departure from the firm to become senior vice president – legal and general counsel for Chesapeake Energy Corporation, the second-largest producer of natural gas in the United States.
“While we never want to see a long-time partner and friend leave the firm, we couldn’t be more excited for Jim, Stacy and their boys,” said Richard Nix, managing director of McAfee & Taft. “Chesapeake is a wonderful organization with an already talented legal department, and Jim’s talents and experience will continue to serve them well. This is, without a doubt, an exceptional opportunity for both him and Chesapeake, and we wish them all the best.”
“While I’m very excited about the opportunities that lie ahead with Chesapeake, I’m immeasurably grateful for the support of my law partners and the incredible experiences I’ve had while at McAfee & Taft these past 17 years,” said Webb. “The lawyers and staff at McAfee are second to none. I feel honored to have practiced there and look forward to watching the firm’s continued success.”
While with McAfee & Taft, Jim worked with leading Oklahoma companies and prominent business leaders on a significant number of legal matters which have had a great impact on business and the community,” said Nix. His accomplishments include serving on the legal team which tried the case on behalf of The Professional Basketball Club, owner of the Oklahoma City Thunder, against the city of Seattle. That case led to the team’s relocation to Oklahoma City.
Webb’s achievements as a trial lawyer earned him inclusion in the Chambers USA Guide to America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, The Best Lawyers in America, and Oklahoma Super Lawyers, and recognition as a “local litigation star” in Benchmark Litigation. His professional and civic contributions have also been recognized with several additional honors, including the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award, the Oklahoma County Bar Association’s Professional Services Award as well as its Community Service Award, and The Journal Record‘s Leadership in Law Award.
McAfee and Taft is one of the nation’s 250 largest law firms as ranked by the National Law Journal and serves clients locally, nationally and internationally in the areas of aviation, business law, corporate and securities, employee benefits, entertainment law, environmental law, healthcare, intellectual property, labor and employment, litigation, oil and gas, real estate and tax and family wealth.
