Susan Shields, a shareholder and member of the firm’s Tax & Family Wealth Group, was honored with the prestigious The Journal Record Award at the Oklahoma County Bar Association’s Law Day Luncheon held at the Skirvin Hilton Hotel on Friday, April 29, 2016. Susan holds the distinction of being the first woman to receive the award, which honors outstanding service to the legal profession. Past winners include McAfee & Taft co-founder Richard G. Taft.
In an article published by The Journal Record, colleague Richard Craig described Susan as bright and talented, with a great skill set for the practice of estate planning and the ability to connect with clients on a personal level.
The award was presented to Susan on her late father’s birthday. Her father, Allan Stocker, was a general practice attorney from Bartlesville, OK, whom she credits with her decision to become a lawyer.
“She really looked up to her dad and the profession,” said colleague Jennifer Callahan. “She’s very committed to the practice of the law. She’s very honored to continue the tradition of her family.”
In recent years, Susan’s professional contributions to the legal community have included serving in leadership positions with the Oklahoma County Bar Association (Board of Directors, 2014-2016), Oklahoma Bar Association (Vice President, 2014; Board of Governors, 2010-2012), and Oklahoma Bar Foundation (Board of Trustees, 2007-2015; President, 2013). She is a Fellow with the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, a member of the Oklahoma City Estate Planning Council, and an adjunct professor at the University of Oklahoma College of Law.
Her contributions on the civic level include serving on the Planned Giving Council of the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, as president of the Central Oklahoma Stanford Alumni Club, and on the board of directors for Oklahoma Cleats for Kids.
