Susan Shields Sworn In As New Member of Oklahoma Bar Association Board of Governors

Susan S. Shields, McAfee & Taft shareholder, was sworn in to the Oklahoma Bar Association Board of Governors by Oklahoma Supreme Court Chief Justice James Edmondson on January 15, 2010, in the Supreme Court Courtroom at the State Capitol Building in Oklahoma City. She will serve a three-year term representing Judicial District Three, which is Oklahoma County.

The 16,000-member Oklahoma Bar Association, located in Oklahoma City, was created by the Oklahoma Supreme Court to advance the administration of justice and to foster and maintain learning, integrity, competence, public service and high standards of conduct among Oklahoma’s legal community.

Susan practices in the areas of estate and family wealth planning, estate and trust administration, business planning and charitable organizations.

She is a trustee of the Oklahoma Bar Foundation; former chair of the Estate Planning, Probate and Trust Section and former member of Legal Ethics Committee of the Oklahoma Bar Association; Fellow of American College of Trust and Estate Counsel; former director of SpiritBank; former director of the Oklahoma Center for Non-Profits; member of the Oklahoma City Estate Planning Council and member of the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation Planned Giving Council.

Susan has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America (Trusts and Estates) and Oklahoma Super Lawyers (Estate Planning and Probate, Tax, and Business/Corporate), where she was named to the prestigious “Top 25 Female” and “Top 50 Oklahoma Lawyers” lists. She was also recognized as Outstanding Pro Bono Lawyer by Legal Aid of Western Oklahoma in 1993 and as the 2005 recipient of the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Earl Sneed Award. Susan was honored as a finalist for the Journal Record‘s Woman of the Year award in 2005.

She has been a frequent speaker on a variety of estate planning, probate and non-profit topics for continuing legal education at the OBA and at other seminars and has served as an adjunct professor in estate planning at the University of Oklahoma College of Law.
