What Your Hospital and Physician Clients Need to Know About the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act
This program will outline the legal obligations impsed by the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA). EMTALA is a federal statute that requires most hospitals to screen patients for emergency medical conditions and provide stabilizing treatment, without regard to a patient’s ability to pay. The speakers will examine the different obligations imposed on hospitals and physicians, and potential penalties for noncompliance. The presenters also will explore areas of tension between hospitals and physicians arising from the Act, and will offer some recommendations for a cohesive response by hospitals and physicians to the EMTALA requirements.
